Horst spends his days in a nursing home due to Alzheimer's and would rather not continue living. His doctor, Dr. Mouton, takes Horst's euthanasia wish seriously but wants to grant it only after confirming that Horst is not primarily suffering from depression. The doctor initiates therapy, and this leads to Horst, after a lifetime of missed opportunities, facing the man responsible for those missed chances: his brother Franz.

Franz needs money, and the euthanasia of his only family member would be very welcome. It's just too bad that Dr. Mouton has also involved Andrea, the woman Horst harbored courtly love for but who felt compelled to be with Franz. Andrea has now realized that Horst was the man of her life. In an attempt to salvage some of their lost love, she wants to take care of him to make the remainder of his life as beautiful as possible.

Franz fears that this may lead Horst to want to die too late. Through the visits of Andrea and Franz, the love triangle among them is rekindled, revealing that the ongoing struggle between the brothers runs much deeper and traces back to Lourdes, the place where their mother disappeared.
